On to the semis
Sloane Stephens
Roger Federer outlasted Jo-Wilfred Tsonga 7-6, 4-6, 7-6, 3-6, 6-3 to advance to a much anticipated semifinal showdown with number 3 seed Andy Murray, who steamrolled Frenchman Jeremy Chardy in straight sets. World #1 Novak Djokovic faces #4 seed David Ferrer in the other semi, which will be played tomorrow evening (3:30 am Thursday on ESPN2).
On the women’s side, 19-year-old American Sloane Stephens upset her idol Serena Williams 3-6, 7-5, 6-4 to set up a semifinal with world #1 Victoria Azerenka. After rolling her ankle in the first round, Williams also developed back trouble which caused her to lock up in the 2nd set and not be able to finish strong. Stephens, taking advantage of the opportunity, is the leader of a promising next generation of American women’s talent along with Madison Keyes and Jamie Hampton who both performed well in the tournament.
