Federer spanks Tomic; Del Potro out
17-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer put on another clinic during the Aussie 3rd round, showing upstart Bernard Tomic that even at 31 years of age he is still one of the best in the business. Tomic had been boasting that he was ready to take out the champion after a sizzling start to 2013 and victory over Novak Djokovic at the exhibition Hopman Cup, but Federer shut him down in 3 sets, 6-4,7-6, 6-1.
In other news, Juan Martin del Potro was ousted by Frenchman Jeremy Chardy, while Gilles Simon outlasted compatriot Gael Monfils in a marathon 5 setter.
